What is Polaris? There are many myths and legends that revolve around the star, but none are nearly as intriguing as the question, “What is Polaris?”

Polaris is the North Star. It is located in the constellation of Ursa Minor, which is the Little Bear. In this constellation, you can find a collection of stars known as the Little Dipper. Polaris is the end of the Little Dipper’s handle. In addition to being the North Star, Polaris also serves as the compass’s navigator. In fact, many cultures still use a magnetic compass, though their accuracy is zero percent.

The North Star is not the brightest star in the sky, but it is easy to see. It’s a dazzling red dot that sits near Earth’s North Celestial Pole. The constellation Little Dipper is a helpful guide when identifying Polaris. In the northern sky, Polaris is almost directly over the North Celestial Pole. Because it’s close to the North Pole, it’s easy to spot from the city.

Consequently, the arc between these two stars leads to the North Star. The Big Dipper circles the planet every 23 hours and 56 minutes. The Big Dipper completes a full counterclockwise circle around Polaris in a single day.

While the North Star may appear stationary, it is actually a star that appears near the pole of the Earth. While many other stars seem to rotate around the pole, Polaris stays anchored to its place in the night sky. By following this star, you will be travelling in the Northern Hemisphere due north. However, the North Star will not always be the pole star: it will be replaced by Vega around year 12000.

As the north pole star, Polaris has qualities of both a Sun and a planet. The ancient Greeks called it Phoenice and used it to navigate their ships. The star has also moved around the sky due to the precession of the equinoxes. Today, it’s depicted on the flag of Alaska and the Nunavut territories.
