The Polaris triple star system consists of two gravitationally bound stars. The first, Polaris Aa, is 5.4 solar masses and has a radius of 37.5 light years. The second, Polaris B, has a mass of only 1.39 solar masses. It orbits the constellation at an average distance of 2.400 AU, or 240 billion miles / 390 kilometers, while Polaris A is much fainter.

The position of Polaris depends on the latitude of the observer. If the observer is in Houston, Texas, the star is 30 degrees above the northern horizon. The trend continues until the traveler reaches the geographic North Pole, which is 90 degrees latitude and appears directly overhead. A person can view the constellation from many locations. However, a person can’t see it at the northern horizon when he or she is in the middle of the night.
